How to make your own Lavender Scented Incense

Incense, it has been used going back to biblical times. The scent of incense has been used mainly in religious ceremonies throughout ancient and modern day religions as well, through burning or reed diffusers. In fact, many types of incense have been used throughout the Middle East, Asia, Greece. Today, citizens of North America use incense just as people of ancient times did.

With a bit of history about incense, it is now time to make your own lavender scented incense at home. Ah, the scent of lavender is just so lovely. Using lavender oil, as an aromatherapy healer is great for relaxation or a way to fall asleep. There are other ways of using the lavender flower or oil as well. If you have ever thought if making your own lavender scented incense, here are some ways to making it from home and possibly sharing your new creation with family and friends too.

Making your own lavender scented incense is a bit of a science project. That’s because the manner in which incense is made requires a particular recipe or recipes to make it just right. Take for instance the base of incense. It requires either a wood or charcoal base. Some charcoal bases are combustible, while others come with a bamboo base. If making incense in your home, the bamboo base is going to be your best bet. This is only because there are no toxins. There is another natural base called Makko. Makko is still combustible, but natural and comes from the Tabu-no-ki tree which is found in Asia.

Along with the base ingredients for your homemade incense, an igniter will have to be added to the ingredients. Yes, all types of incense, on the market that is, are made with an igniter. To find and purchase this igniter, you will have to go to your local drug store. This igniter, potassium nitrate, is not sold on store shelves. In fact, this ingredient is explosive and you just might create your own fireworks. Now mind you, this igniter is only used when making a Block Incense.

Now, in order to make your own Lavender Scented Incense at home, you will need the following hardware and natural oils or herbs which are also the tools of the trade: Incense Burner, 2 mixing bowls or plastic bags for holding food, stirring spoon, food processor, tweezers, distilled water (boiled water) or fragrant hydrosols, measuring cups, spoons or gram scale, candle or lighter, mica, again a mortar & pestle, food processor or coffee grinder, wax paper, natural incense ingredients and a notebook. It might be important for you to take notes so next time you make incense, you will already have the recipe written down.It is best to use the purest herbs, resin and woods as possible. There are over 30 herbs, including Lavender, which can be added to your incense. There are also over 15 Resins and 10 Woods which can be added to your recipe. Although, using all these at once is not advisable.

If you are going to make a cone or stick incense, you will probably be needing to make what is called a loose incense recipe. In this is the case, please let the ingredients rest overnight so they will mix well for the formation of the cone or sticks. With the ingredients now rested, it is time to add the Makko. Now, you can create your cones or sticks. Just to be safe, before forming the incense, do a small test of your mixture. It is not necessary to add a Resin in all your recipes. In fact, if you want, just use Makko as glue to hold the incense together.

The reason for wax paper would be for making incense sticks. What you do is place the incense mixture in the wax paper and roll it until it is the consistency you want. Now, creating a cone is simple too. Roll the mixture into a ball shape, then flatten the bottom out and with both hands, squeeze the mixture into a triangle shape.

To simply make your Lavender Incense, use a recipe that uses 2-3 Parts Lavender Flowers (herbs), 10-25% Makko and 2 Parts Cedar. Since this is your first attempt at making Lavender Incense, have fun and create your own recipes as well. There are many ways of creating Lavender Incense.
