Baldy No More

Male pattern baldness is a terror to many men. As kids and teenagers growing up we can see what might be our future in the changing hairlines of our dads and granddads. True, we might not end up like them, but on the other hand baldness patterns are usually hereditary, and no amount of diets or snake-oil ointments will make a difference. If our genes dictate that we will begin to lose hair off our heads at a certain age, and in a certain way, then there is nothing that we can do to stave it off for a few more years.
However, fear not. It is not all doom and gloom, for once baldness begins to strike, some hair loss treatments that really work are now available. You still have to be on your guard against unscrupulous companies selling useless products, but some treatments to help to slow the rate of loss, or replace lost hair.
Footballer Wayne Rooney began to go bald in his very early twenties, but recently showed off his new hair transplant. According to some reports it cost him £30,000 at a private clinic on London’s Harley Street, so we have to face up to the fact that this form of hair loss treatment is not going to be for all of us non-footballers!
More affordable approaches include traditional wigs and toupees, but a ‘syrup’(from Cockney rhyming slang: syrup of fig = wig) is not particularly fashionable today. Instead, drugs are usually the first choice of modern men, with several treatments not only slowing down the rate of hair loss, but also actually encouraging a certain amount of re-growth. For example, the Propecia pill has been approved by the American Food and Drug Agency. Unwanted side effects of this drug were noted in only two percent of male patients, so it is a safe option, too.
Or, you can just accept that you are following the Patrick Stewart route and embrace your outer baldness.
